O'Hara Catholic School

Called to Protect

Volunteer Requirements & Training Information

O'Hara, along with every other school and church within the Archdiocese of Portland, follows requirements referred to as Called to Protect.  These requirements are set forth by the Archdiocese to ensure that our volunteers and staff are trained and cleared to work in schools, and that our schools and churches remain safe for our kids.

Listed below are the Archdiocesan requirements to volunteer with children. Depending on your clearance status last school year, you are required to complete some of the requirements detailed below.

Click here to view requirements for new volunteers.  A new volunteer is someone who has not been cleared through the Archdiocese of Portland to volunteer.

1. BACKGROUND CHECK

In accordance with the Archdiocese of Portland, every potential adult volunteer must have a background check whether you are working directly with children or not. Background checks are renewed every THREE years. Forms can be obtained through the front office. Once your background is processed, you will receive a card from the Archdiocese of Portland that allows you to volunteer at any parish, school or other entity within the Archdiocese. The issue and expiration date are also listed on the card for your reference.

Click here to download a Background Check form; it is a 2 page form, and both pages must be completed and signedPlease note: there is a $13 charge per form to process the background check.  Checks can be made payable to O'Hara.

2. CALLED TO PROTECT DVD SERIES

During the training, you will watch TWO videos - Called to Protect for Parents and Families and Called to Protect for Ministries. Training lasts about 1.5 hours. Per Archdiocesan guidelines, as long as you remain current with your background check and yearly online training courses, you are only required to watch the DVD series one time.

The following three trainings are scheduled for January 2012 in the O'Hara Library:
Wednesday, January 11th - 8:45am-10:15am
Friday, January 13th - 12:00pm - 1:30pm
Thursday, January 19th  - 6:00pm - 7:30pm
3. ONLINE TRAINING COURSES

Each year, the Archdiocese requires that one specific online course be viewed in order to stay current. The 2011/2012 course is called "Abuse Prevention Refresher". This will take approximately 50 minutes for you to complete.
