We invite you to join us in building the Future of O'Hara...
4 PHASE REMODEL & ADDITION @ O'HARA CATHOLIC SCHOOL
Possessing a proud history dating back to 1889, O'Hara Catholic School (formerly St. Mary School) has gained the trust and confidence of the greater Lane County community as a school synonymous with excellence, quality education, service, and faith. For over 125 years, O'Hara families have made sacrifices to provide their children a strong Catholic education. Many generations of students, in some cases four generations strong, have been shaped into who they are today by their O'Hara experience.
The O'Hara philosophy of Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve is embraced by the students who have passed through our doors. O'Hara Catholic School offers students a secure and nurturing environment where they are encouraged to strive for excellence, to be life-long learners, to demonstrate strong Catholic values, and to generously serve God and others. Our students are well prepared for high school, college and beyond.
The essential values of O'Hara Catholic School are as meaningful today as they were over one hundred years ago. We humbly acknowledge the generosity of past generations that paved the way for the O'Hara we have today. We commit ourselves in this generation to follow their example, so that it might be said of us, that our school remained true to the time tested philosophy of entering to learn and going forth to serve.
The Realities of Our Time...
As we write the next chapter of O'Hara's proud history, we focus on what matters most: providing students with a Christ-centered quality education. A hallmark of O'Hara is to develop the whole child - academically, physically, socially and spiritually. This achievement is made possible by the dedicated service of a highly qualified staff. Today, forty-five men and women continue in the tradition of the Sisters of the Holy Names by providing strong educational excellence while serving as teachers and role models to the 522 students entrusted to them.
We take tremendous pride in these achievements, but we also recognize the strategic challenges that stand in the way of our aspirations for excellence in future endeavors.
1. Originally built as a high school, O'Hara (formerly St. Francis High School) has classrooms built and designed for high school students. Although some modifications have been made to these classrooms, they are not optimal for the 3 and 4-year-olds in PreSchool and PreKindergarten.
2. Functioning in an aging sixty-seven year old building stands as a clear and present challenge to our core academic purposes. Confined by the walls of the building, O'Hara is in need of more space to adequately teach. Issues such as electrical and technology updates, classroom upgrades, environmental and energy efficiency, additional teaching space, and meeting space will need to be addressed. O'Hara needs to be made new again - ready for the many generations to come.
3. We are currently unable to hold Masses during the week for more than one classroom. Our capacity allows only one classroom (not the entire grade) to celebrate Mass in the chapel that was originally converted from part of a classroom.
4. We do not have the appropriate spaces for music, art and science instruction. Current music and art classrooms exist in old locker rooms. Although many upgrades have been made to accommodate these classrooms, the fact remains that they are less than ideal. The science department, using S.T.E.M. as a teaching philosophy, has to use non-dedicated space whenever available; including the stage, cafeteria, classrooms, etc.
5. Poor driveways with pot holes and non-dedicated parking lots make drop-off and pick-up times difficult and hard on vehicles. A permanent solution is needed to alleviate the constant repairs required to maintain drivable access.
We realize that in order for O'Hara Catholic School to sustain and enrich the faith-based and excellence in education long associated with our school, the needs of the campus must be addressed today. In doing so, we will continue to strengthen our position as one of the premier educators in Lane County, while maintaining O'Hara's affordable tuition for all. It is a mission of which we are proud!
The O’Hara of Tomorrow…
Although O'Hara has been blessed in so many ways, we cannot address these challenges without the loyalty and support of those who value it most. Each of us is called at this unique moment in time to leave our mark on the O'Hara Catholic School of tomorrow.
Through a comprehensive assessment process, the following actions have been identified as fundamental to the vitality and mission of O'Hara. Outside of tearing down and constructing a brand new building (which is cost prohibitive) these objectives will position O'Hara with a dedicated Early Childhood Learning Center, innovative and forward-thinking classrooms, and updated and energy efficient mechanical and plumbing systems. Confident that O'Hara will be around for another one hundred twenty-five years, we are called to provide the resources necessary to ensure that an O'Hara education is available for future generations of students.
Our Call to Action...
This four-stage, four-year project has a total projected cost of $6.675 million.
The Future is in Our Hands…
O'Hara Catholic School recognizes that these goals and initiatives are ambitious, and that achieving them will involve sacrifice. Grateful for a blessed history and hopeful of an even brighter future, we understand the strategic challenges we face. We also know that at every critical juncture, O'Hara's alumni, parents, grandparents, friends and community have answered the call to leave their mark on the O'Hara Catholic School legacy.
An O'Hara education is, as it always has been, a gift from one generation to the next. As the Sisters of the Holy Names, past faculty, and families did for us, so each of us is asked to do for others - to ensure that an O'Hara education remains steeped in excellence. Let it be said that we gave the gift of an O'Hara education for generations to come.
Over the next several months, there will be information in the front lobby about the project. Invitations for gathering together, learning more about the project, and a call to give will be mailed out. Tammy Conway, Principal, and Sean Jones, Director of Advancement, will be reaching out to as many of you as possible for a personal ask. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have questions or would like to schedule a meeting.
We are tremendously thrilled about the opportunity to continue providing Catholic education in Lane County for generations to come. O'Hara remains committed to bringing technological advances and being at the forefront of academic excellence. We value and appreciate all of our supporters and the time and treasures that they have provided and continue to give. We hope this brings joy to you and your family - joy in supporting a cause in which we all believe and value. Your dedication to O'Hara Catholic School is your first gift, and we are so grateful.
